Mens Underwear Style Definitions
Don’t know the lingo and wondering to yourself what is the difference between briefs, trunks and budgie smugglers? We have taken out the guesswork with these simple to understand definitions and links to their corresponding current mens underwear trends.
Bikinis
A very brief, close-fitting pair of bathing trunks for men or boys. Brief underpants reach to the hips or below it rather than to the waist.
Boardshorts
Designed as a quick-drying garment and usually worn without underwear. Boardshorts are normally longer than the common trunks, shorts or form-fitting speedo styles of swimwear and sometimes have a baggy appearance. They extend to the knee area or slightly above it in length.
Boxer Briefs
A pair of mens underwear that have legs like a boxer but tight like a brief to provide support without ‘strangulation.’
Boxer Shorts
Men’s loose-fitting undershorts with an elastic waistband. Commonly made of satin or cotton.
Boyshorts
Underwear briefs designed with higher cut leg holes and lower riding waistline. Legs usually rest just above or at the buttock-thigh crease, with the waist on or below the hip.
Briefs
Close-fitting, legless underpants with an elastic waistband.
Ergonomic
The optimized relationship between humans and the tools/equipment/environment they interact with. Everything is supported in a comfortable manner without crushing even after a long period of physical inactivity or intensive sports. Additionally, ergonomic designs enhance psychological well-being by making us look the way we would like to look in front of others.
G Strings
A strip of cloth passed between the legs and supported by a waist cord.
Jammers
They provide moderate coverage from the mid-waist to the area above the knee, somewhat resembling compression shorts worn by many athletes. They have a form fitting design to reduce water resistance.
Jock Straps
An elasticized belt, a men’s undergarment, with a pouch for supporting and protecting the genitals, worn esp. while participating in athletics.
Long Boxer Briefs
Boxer briefs that extend close to the knees.
Low-Rise
Style of underwear that sits low on the hips for an invisible look when worn under low-rise jeans and trousers.
Muscle Tops
A T-shirt having short sleeves or no sleeves that shows off muscle development in the arms.
Pouch
The fabric triangle creating the cup area in a man’s thong or g-string.
Singlets
A sleeveless athletic jersey, especially loose-fitting tops.
Squarecuts
The cut is between bikini and trunk swimsuits. Sometimes they are also called boxcuts which cover from the waist to just below genitals.
Tank Tops
A tight-fitting sleeveless shirt with wide shoulder straps and low neck and no front opening; often worn over a shirt.
Thongs
A brief garment for the lower body that exposes the buttocks, consisting of a strip of fabric passing between the thighs and attached to a band around the waist.
Trunks
Classic square-cut swimsuits that cover from the waist to the mid-upper leg. Trunks are normally shorter than boardshorts, which extend to the knees.
Square-Neck
A T-shirt having a “square” shaped neckline.
V-Neck
A T-shirt having a “V” shaped neckline.
