The company was originally established in 1876, as a modern, market driven business. In the early 1900’s the IZOD name was adopted while the owners were vacationing in London and happened upon a chance encounter with a an elegant tailor making custom shirts for King George VI. An agreement was made to purchase the name upon the tailor’s retirement; the IZOD name became official. Shortly thereafter, in Holland, John M. Van Heusen created a comfortable, self-folding collar. While traveling to the United States he met Isaac Phillips, Moses’ son, and together they formed the Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation. Viola. His patent for this collar was approved in 1921.
Between 1921-1970 many changes to the shirt and shirt collar took place among their designs, just as several shoe styles were born. Then in 1998 the company introduced the DKNY dress line under a licensing agreement with Donna Karan, managed separately between the United States and Britain; becoming one in 2000, by acquiring worldwide rights and becoming the number one selling dress shirt in the world.
